Valentine’s Day Photoshoot Baby Girl Outfits & Gifts

January 31, 2021      Kyla

*This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may receive a small commission at no cost to you, if you make a purchase through a link!*

We’ve all been there. We want something cute and unique for our little cutie pie to wear for a holiday, but what is there other than the typical little “first ________” onesies? If you’re ready to branch out from stereotypical holiday outfits and stage an adorable photoshoot this Valentine’s Day, here are some precious and affordable options! A lot of the options are great for last minute parents too, because they’re Amazon and Target!

Amazon & Target Valentine's Day Baby Outfit Ideas

AMAZON-

Here are some of the cutest options from Amazon for girls, just click the image and it links to where you can buy it!

I have this exact sweater for Elsie! I plan on styling it with cable knit leggings which I will link below the sweater! They also have other colors and patterns!

Time for a coupe of precious rompers, also great with cable knit leggings, but also knee high socks would be super cute!

A picture with Daddy holding her with this little sweatshirt?! SO STINKIN CUTE! I love this idea!

These little amazon rompers are soooo cute, but size down! Also the bows that come with them are not my favorite, just FYI! If you want some ideas for affordable Amazon bows I have some links here!

I can’t get over these cute sunglasses! They have other colors too like cream, red, even turtleshell! Too adorable!

TARGET-

Now one of my all time favorite places to shop is Target. I love that during COVID they have great shipping options AND drive up options! Fun fact, if they don’t have your kids size in stock you can have it shipped for free to the store and do drive up pick up when it gets there! Worth it! Here are some adorable options at Target!

This little sweatshirt is too cute with the ruffles and heart! I love this line at Target, Grayson Mini! I don’t have this one, but I have another sweatshirt by this brand it is so soft! I would size up and then add some cable knit leggings and a bow!

This one is just so classic to me. I think this with some white knee high socks and maybe some cute mary janes and a bow would be darling!

Another sweater romper to steal your heart!

Any of these outfits would make the CUTEST little Valentine’s look! Now for the photoshoot. I think a white blanket on the floor or a white wall is a super clean look for pictures, and will make your outfits pop! I saw another really cool photoshoot idea on TikTok and I will be sharing that later this week hopefully!

Valentine’s Day Gifts for Baby

If you’re anything like me you are already planning on getting your little baby bear a Valentine’s Day gift, but WHAT TO GET A TINY BABY? They don’t want flowers and can’t have chocolate. Here are some cute ideas, some of which I am using for Elsie this year!

The pictures are links! Just click them to see the item where you can buy it!

Love Monster

This is really adorable book that I used to read to my 1st Graders on Valentine’s Day. It’s about a little monster searching for someone to love him! It also comes in board book form for the tinies!

Love Monster: Bright, Rachel: 9780374346461: Amazon.com: Books

Squishmallow

I don’t know if you have heard of the Squishmallow craze, but it’s basically the modern day beanie babies! Literally they have little tags that describe the squishes personality and gives their name! They are so cute and soft, and my sister actually calls Elsie “Squishmallow” as a nickname! Of course we had to get her one! They have so many cute ones for Valentine’s! I got Elsie the tie dye pegasus! Too cute. Just check out their site and pick one out for your cutie, they will love it for years to come!

Oh, one more thing they have these things EVERYWHERE. Target, Walmart, Amazon, Walgreens/CVS, TJMaxx, Marshalls! The hunt is part of the fun!

Cute Teether

I literally can’t even handle how cute this little rose colored rainbow teether is, and I love the sunshine neutral teether for that little sunshine in your life!

And finally, take a minute and write that sweet baby a note about how much you love them and tuck it away for them in the future!

I hope this post was helpful and gave you loads of ideas on how to make this Valentine’s Day special and to capture those memories with some priceless pics!

If you end up using any of these items for Valentine’s Day I’d LOVE if you could tag me on instagram @kylasieges or email me at [email protected] if you don’t have social media!

Have fun Mama!

3-4 Month Old Baby Favorites

January 26, 2021      Kyla

*This post contains some affiliate links. If you purchase I may receive a small percentage of the profit, at no additional cost to you.*

Now that Elsie is almost 5 months old (Um, HOW? It goes too fast!) I wanted to take a moment to put together some of her favorites of the month to help any parents starting the 3-4 month period and wanting a little bit of guidance.

Right around 3 months Elsie really left the newborn phase and reached the true baby stage. She was curious, alert, and playful. By 4 months she was grabbing and holding objects, smiling, and laughing, which really helped us know what she enjoyed! Here are a few of Elsie’s favorites!

Teethers

Elsie really started loving to chew on her hand around the 3 month mark and she is always covered in drool. We tried quite a few teethers (the banana, the classic keys, ras-berry pacifier teether, a frozen ring) and honestly she was not a fan. We finally found 2 she loves!

Her absolute favorite is the Mombella Mushroom Teether! Like I said she loves to chew her hands and this teether gave the ability to chew her hands without actually chewing her hands. Here is a TikTok I made showing how the teether works!

It truly is GENIUS. I have recommended this teether to friends and they too swear by it!

Tunno Tots Silicone Teether - "Cheeks for Weeks" Grey 819158026882 | eBay

Next is the Tunno Tots Teether! I can’t find the exact one I have to link, but I linked one by the same brand! I got mine at TJMaxx so maybe it was discontinued with their brand? I’m not sure. Regardless we have 2 by this brand and they are amazing! Easy for little hands to grab, easy to clean, and soft for baby’s gums! Elsie loves both of hers! They also are a brand that gives back. When you purchase a product from them they give a meal to a child in need!

The Skip Hop Activity Center

This was Elsie’s big gift for Christmas and I was a little sad because at first she was not a fan and her feet barely touched a platform, but now that she’s in her 4th month she is starting to really enjoy it. She loves being able to stand and look around at what is going on in the room. She also enjoys interacting with the toys. I think the Skip Hop Activity Center will be great as she continues to develop and figure out the toys more and more. When I was choosing an activity center I really loved how the skip hop was a 3-in-1, meaning it turned from an activity center you were IN to a stand and play when they were walking and then into a plain chalk table when they were done with and over the toys! Genius! I think this thing will be with us for quite a while!

Baby Einstein Radio

The Baby Einstein Radio really is all it’s cracked up to be. The thousands of 5 star ratings are for a reason. I don’t quite get it, but Els loves this toy. I take it when we go in the car or when we go to the doctor, and sure enough it keeps her mesmerized and occupied! Even better? It’s classical music! YAY. Just get it. It’s affordable and they’ll love it.

Sassy Toys

So far we only have 2 Sassy brand toys, but they are amazing! We have the Sassy Wonderwheel, which can suction to a table, high chair, floor, activity center, and more! It rattles, spins, is colorful, has rings on the bottom, is high contrast, and more! Elsie is so enchanted by it and loves watching it spin and has started even playing around with it herself now that she’s grabbing things! It’s perfect to suction to the high chair while we are eating dinner and she needs to be occupied for a bit.

We also have the developmental sensory ball. My husband calls it her “COVID Ball” lol. Men. It is colorful, rattles, has mirrors, has high contrast areas, and more! She absolutely loves holding on to the bumps and putting it in her mouth! She now is starting to hold it with her hands and her feet! Haha. Gotta love it!

I truly do recommend both these products and will be trying more from the Sassy brand because so far the elementary school teacher in me is impressed!

Hudson Sherpa Sleepsack

So in the middle of her third month Elsie started showing signs she might start rolling over onto her tummy. She already could roll tummy to back, but I was worried about her rolling back to tummy in a swaddle, so we weaned off the swaddle and got into a sleep sack. She love love loves her Hudson Sleepsack. They have so many different fabrics and patterns, and such a better price than Halo! We have the Halo, this is honestly the same.

Linkimals

Linkimals in general are so cool, but if you’re going to get one, get the sloth. Linkimals are Fisher Price toys that link together and communicate together when they are all on. They talk back and forth, sing, and light up. The sloth even dances, which is why I think Elsie loves him the most! We have QUITE the collection. We love watching all of them light up and sing! The main reason I love these toys are they are a huge tummy time motivator. I had tried everything and these toys finally got her lifting her head high and pushing up on her hands now!

Here is a video of Elsie during tummy time watching her Linkimals! It really is crazy because she really dislikes tummy time, but here she is so content watching them sing, dance, and light up!

There are SO many products and toys out there, but I hope this helps you narrow down your search for the best for your 3-4 month old baby! This also makes a great gift guide for any little ones in your life, or for baby showers! Please let me know in the comments or on instagram your favorite toys for 3-4 month olds!

5 C-Section Recovery Tips I Wish I Would Have Known

5 C-Section Recovery Tips I Wish I Would Have Known

*There are affiliate links in this post that may potentially lead to a very small percentage of the profit coming to me if you make a purchase. I only recommend products I believe in fully. Please feel free to reach out if you have questions!*

No one starts off their pregnancy anticipating a c-section. It can be scary when you are faced with that reality, and it can feel even more scary when you have not prepared yourself for that possibility as well as you have done research on vaginal birth. I know that I knew all the tips and tricks for healing my lady bits, but nothing about caring for my scar. Sadly no one in the hospital really let me know what to do for aftercare. The most I was told was to gently wash it and to put a maxi pad on the incision to keep it dry. That was it.

Here are my top 5 tips that I wish I would have known before my c-section. Hopefully they make your recovery much easier! (Links included!)

1.) Step Stool

You are going to want to get a small step stool to help you get into your bed at home. A C-section is a MAJOR abdominal surgery. They cut through all your muscles so you have essentially no abdominal control right after. You will want a stool to help you get up into bed, just trust me.

2.) High-Waisted Compression Underwear & Waist Binder

You are NOT going to want to put on normal rise underwear that will rub all on your scar and you are going to feel like your guts are going to fall out! For this reason you are going to want high-waisted underwear that are going to hold you in and make you feel like a person. I LOVED these underwear I got off amazon! They were just enough compression to make me feel secure, but not enough to make me feel bound or anything.

You will want a waist binder for when you are walking around postpartum. Again you are going to feel like your insides are going to fall out and a waist bind helps you stand up straight and feel like a person! I got mine from my hospital for free, but they have lots like the one I have on amazon in case your hospital will not give you one. I will note I had to ask and request one.

3.) Blow Dryer

You are probably confused, and rightfully so. My OB told me my goal was to keep my incision clean and dry. Well. I am going to be graphic and frank. When you have a giant belly coming down from preganancy, it is just a fat flab. Unless you are extremely thin you will probably have some tummy overhang (don’t fret, this will go down, mine has now!) It is going to hang over your incision a little… which makes it nice and m o i s t. *barf* Not the best for a healing giant wound. So after my shower and whenever it felt damp I would get my blowdryer out and on low heat/cool I would lift my csection pouch and blow dry under there. Weird and slightly disturbing? Yes. Did it work wonderfully? Also yes.

4.) An Old Cotton Tshirt

Along the lines of keeping your incision dry, your surgeon is going to give you the idea of putting a maxi pad on your incision. This was not comfortable, did not stay well, and surprisingly wasn’t very moisture absorbent. What was? An old t-shirt I didn’t care about cut into about 4 inch wide strips folded in half the length of my scar. I would just stick them under my c-section apron (lol, this really is humorous now, but definitely was NOT in the moment) against my scar. I changed them out as needed usually about 3 times a day to keep it nice and dry! Worked like a charm!

5.) Frida Mom Upside Down Peri Bottle

Like just about every expectant Mom I did my research on vaginal birth. Ya girl was ready! I had all the things, tuck pads, fancy adult diapers, dermaplast, everything- including the Frida Mom Upside Down Peri Bottle. After my c-section I found an alternate c-section Mama use for the peri bottle! After I gently lathered up my scar with dove body wash I would then fill up my peri bottle with warm water and use it to gently rinse my scar under my c-section flab! It worked like a charm, and helped keep everything squeaky clean!

A few other things you are going to need? You are going to need maxi pads, just because you had a c-section does not mean you are not going to bleed a bunch- you will. I LOVED the flex foam ones, they weren’t so gross to wear. You will also want loose clothing that is high-waisted or just a dress to recover in. You will not want anything pressing on the scar for a bit. You may want to start taking some probiotics to help you not get a yeast infection on your scar. I got a yeast infection, but these probiotics really helped me! I also really loved the halo bassinet because you could push down the side and it was bed height so I did not have to lean over to pick up my daughter Elsie. You are going to also want LOTS of help everything is hard after a c-section especially that first week!

A c-section is tough, but so are you, and it is worth it for that sweet baby!

10 Baby Registry Items That Are Actually Worth It

January 22, 2021      Kyla

When I was registering for items for my daughter before she was born I remember feeling two major things.

1.) I felt like I needed everything, especially the most expensive versions of everything (I mean they must be better, right?)

AND

2.) I felt overwhelmed by all of the baby products. What was even necessary? What was worth my money/other’s money (lol)?

I will be the first to admit I got way too much and I fell in the “aesthetic” and “everything must be instagram perfect” Mom trap. Sometimes those items were actually really helpful, but a lot of times they were just for looks and show and the fisher price version was better. My baby is now 4 months old and I feel like I have a pretty firm grasp on what was actually worth my money.

So without further adieu let’s get into my top 10 baby registry items (in no particular order) that are actually worth it.

1.) The Angelcare Bath Tub

Then (1 month old)

Now (4.5 months old)

As you can maybe tell from the first picture the angelcare bathtub is fully worth the hype. I got one of those super cute and adorable blooming flower baths, and my did she hate it- actually scratch that, we all hated it. She was squished, it was difficult to wash her, she was not well supported. It was so cute, but not functional, sadly. We immediately switched to the angelcare tub and never looked back. It’s easy to clean, easy to store, and she is perfectly supported throughout the bathing process!

2.) The Leacho Baby Lounger

Then (a few days old)
Now (4.5 months old)

I knew that a baby lounger of some sort would be essential for us. I registered for a boppy baby lounger, but got gifted a different brand, the Leacho baby lounger. I had used the boppy baby lounger when I nannied, and it was great, but WOW this lounger that we were gifted was even better. I am so grateful we got it because at 4.5 months old we are STILL using it! I really loved that it really snuggled her and helped her feel secure. She also was fairly elevated which really helped her tummy and reflux. We used this thing constantly a newborn for naps and we still use it for lounging now. Seriously I don’t know what I would have done without it. I vouch this is way better than boppy.

3.) Snuggle Me Organic & Halo Bassinet

Elsie in her Snuggle Me Organic

The Halo Bassinet that we had saved my life. I had a c-section due to the fact Elsie was breech, and I was able to get her out of the basinet easily with the push down side. I also really loved how the stand was adjustable and she was bed height. Elsie slept really well in her lounger that I just mentioned, but she struggled, hard, in the bassinet. One night I was desperate for a 3 hour stretch of sleep and I read that the snuggle me organic would snuggle her and help her feel secure like she did in the womb (we we already swaddling, but that wasn’t enough.) I know that it is not technically safe sleep, please don’t come for me (we had the owlet on at all times to monitor her.) When I tell you that thing worked, it WORKED. She went from 1-2 hour stretches to 4 hour stretches immediately. I swear by it, and it fits in the bassinet!

Elsie in her newborn insert in the Halo Bassinet

Now personally if you aren’t going to have the Owlet on the baby monitoring their oxygen and heart rate I might skip on it out of fear of SIDS or suffocation, however we also ended up using a newborn insert that fits into the bassinet, which is safe for sleep and it worked BEAUTIFULLY! So check both out and decide what is best for you and your family. Bottom line, if your baby is like mine, they will want to feel snuggled and not just be floating around in a big bassinet.

4.) A Playmat for Tummy Time

We started out with the Skip Hop silverlinings playmat and Elsie, my 4 month old, NOW loves it because she can finally reach the toys overhead. That being said it did not provide much encouragement for tummy time, it mainly entertained her when she was on her back. I ended up purchasing the Fisher Price deluxe kick and play because I needed my daughter to be motivated to lift her head during tummy time. The piano at the end of the mat plays fun music and lights up and was just what she needed! I would recommend the Fisher Price the most, however Elsie LOVES rolling around on the Skip Hop, which has more room so I would suggest taking a look at both, either are good options.

When all we had was the Skip Hop I did purchase the Baby Einstein tummy time mirror and contrast cards! Elsie really does love that too. Even when she was itty bitty the high contrast cards caught and kept her attention!

5.) Velcro Swaddles

Starting in the hospital we use Swaddle Me velcro swaddles, and they are a life saver. They are way easier and safer than regular blanket swaddles, and you can get them way snugger! A couple nights we (very stupidly) tried to go without swaddles and had her re-swaddled before the end of the night. Newborn babies just crave that snuggled feeling and they need to be swaddled to stop them from having the Moro Reflex too hard and startling themselves awake every few minutes! Once Elsie hit about 3 months we moved to the Halo Sleepsack Swaddle because felt like it gave her lower half more room to move and we knew it would be easier to transition her out of. I can make a post about how we successfully got her out of the swaddle once she started rolling a lot if you would be interested!

6.) The Hatch Sound Machine

Ever since we brought her home we have use the Hatch sound machine. We keep the volume at 50% and we keep it on the white noise setting. I have had other sound machines and have always returned them because I could hear the loop and they bothered us more than they helped. This was so highly recommended I was scared it would be overhyped, but I was wrong. This thing is amazing. I sleep better and so does my daughter. It really drowns out background noises and also just helps mimic the sound of the womb for her. I had tried laying her down without it and without fail her naps are like 20 min instead of 2 hours! It is amazing and such a difference maker. I also love that it has the light function when you need to do those middle of the night feedings, but don’t want to turn on a bright light and wake everyone up. Also I love that it is controllable from the app on your phone and completely customizable (color, sound, volume, etc.) Do yourself a favor and get it.

7.) Plain Muslin Burp Cloths

Everyone got me adorable patterned and even embroidered burp cloths, and wow, they completely sucked. They were so small and not absorbent at all. Don’t get me wrong they were ADORABLE, but not functional. When you have a baby just spitting up everywhere the last thing you want is an non-functional but cute towel. Lol. Trust me. I ended up going back and using an amazon gift card to buy some plain white muslin burp cloths (which are actually old diaper inserts) and let me tell you, they absorb everything and are seriously awesome. Not to mention they are fairly inexpensive compared to the “cute” ones. Win win.

8.) Baby Bum Brush & Aquaphor

Okay listen. This seems silly, but the little baby butt spatula is a lifesaver, at least in my book. Who wants to be spreading stick creams all over a baby’s bum with their bare hand? Not I. Also, Elsie got an open sore on her bottom despite us constantly changing her diaper as a newborn. Our pediatrician told us that’s very normal with how acidic baby poop is mixed with their sensitive skin! My friend suggested aquaphor when nothing else was working (we tried all the butt pastes) and WOW it was a game changer. She had the sore on her bum for about 2 weeks, but within 1 day of using the aquaphor her sore was almost gone! Please just skip the diaper creams and get aquaphor. It also has so many other uses so it’s multi-functional!

9.) Bottle Cleaning System

We have the Boon system with the Boon bottle brushes, and they are so cute! We also have the infamous Boon grass. It is all it’s hyped up to be. I love that you can also throw the whole system in the dishwasher every once in a while for a refresh! We also just got a microwave sanitation system and it works perfectly and I don’t feel the need for the expensive systems!

10.) Owlet

Finally, the Owlet. Look, I know it’s a hefty price, but it is 12314324325% worth it in my opinion. I struggled through infertility and loss before having my daughter and also have anxiety. Once my daughter was here I had so much fear about sleep. I did not want to close my eyes in fear she would stop breathing if I stopped staring at her. The Owlet gave me the peace of mind that I needed to actually shut my eyes and “sleep when the baby sleeps.” I also love that you can keep track of their sleep cycles and how long of stretches they are sleeping! Despite the price, the Owlet is worth every penny. Also, side note- put that thing out of reach of your dog. My pug somehow get ahold of the sock and tore up the sensor. We love it so much though we bought a $100+ replacement sensor, if that tells you anything about how much we love it!

There are so many products out there, and they are not all created equally. I can maybe make a post about the registry items I would NOT recommend or that are a waste of money in the future. There were definitely a few of those.

I hope this list and descriptions were helpful! If they were please comment and subscribe!

Love,

Welcome

January 21, 2021      Kyla

Wow, a first blog post. This is stressful. Let me start with introducing myself. Hi, I’m Kyla. I am 26 years old, I’m married to my high school sweetheart and we just had our first baby, Elsie Marie. She’s the light of my life.

We live in NC. I have a teaching degree and teach 2nd grade (although I have only taught a couple weeks at the beginning of the year due to maternity leave.) My husband is an ordained minister that currently serves as a hospice chaplain.

This is a picture from Elsie’s dedication at our church.

I used to blog back in high school, on blogger lol. It was a like my journal through those “good ‘ol days” and I really enjoyed it. Ever since I had my daughter I feel like I have a lot to share. I enjoy the community that blogging brings, and I love having a place to express myself! I also think that the internet could use a few more realistic portrayals of motherhood, adulting, etc. I feel like ever since I became a Mom I’ve been even more bombarded with the need to be picture perfect, and that is just not healthy. So many aesthetic instas and blogs, and it does not take anyone too long to start feeling less than perfect.

So welcome to this blog. A safe space for all the “bad mom” moments and for the not so perfect days. Also a fun spot to share DIY projects, fun activities for your kids/baby, random ramblings, clothing hauls, tips and tricks, and honestly anything that comes to my mind!

If you enjoy chaotic energy. You’re in the right place. My ADHD brain goes pretty fast. Hope you enjoy the ride with me. It’s about to get fun.
