DIY Boho Ikea Play Kitchen Makeover

For Elsie’s first birthday I knew I wanted to create the perfect play kitchen for her playroom, and I had seen a few Tiktoks and posts about Moms making over the ikea play kitchen! I knew I definitely wanted to go the custom route, I love a good DIY! The play kitchen is $89, but I looked on FB Marketplace and got a gently used one already put together for $40! Definitely check FB Marketplace before buying full price!

This makeover, while drastic was actually very simple.

First I took off the faucet, sink, gray leg covers, and set them aside to spray paint. Then I removed the handles, which would be replaced.

Next, I needed to remove the plastic that was in the oven and the microwave. I just used a hammer to make a crack and then pushed again to make a hole. They then pulled out pretty easily.

After all this preliminary work was done it was time to start making it *cute*! YAY the best part.

You need rattan webbing, I got mine precut from the Etsy Shop RattanRevivalCo, you can purchase it here! I love how easy it is, you just purchase it and it fits perfectly in the microwave and oven “windows” no cutting, no measuring! I used a staple gun to secure it to the backside!

Next I added the wooden handles, which I also purchased from an etsy shop! You can purchase them here! You just use a screw driver or a drill and they screw right in now problem. They sell knobs you can put above the oven, but I chose not to.

Next you’re going to want to spray paint the gray plastic pieces. I used spray paint that was also primer and then did a clear sealant. It took a good 3-4 coats for everything. I spray painted everything (even the hooks for the utensils) either white or a brass. This takes a little time since you have to do multiple coats, so I suggest starting this in the morning. Make sure to let this sit at least 24-48 hrs after to really set.

I chose to leave the stovetop as is because it was realistic and the burners light up when you push the buttons! Some people have added a wooden stovetop though.

Now for what I think makes the biggest statement, the backsplash! I chose to do this retro floral wallpaper from Allen Rose! Unfortunately the exact one I purchased is no longer on their site, so I will link some similar ones.

Wallpaper Choices-

ONE | TWO | THREE

We used a piece of plywood from Lowes, and they cut it for us.

These are the dimensions you will need-

19.5 Inches Height x 26.8 Inches Width

This will cover the back of the opening and you can put your wallpaper on this piece of plywood! Just make sure to get peel and stick wallpaper.

You will then drill holes through the plywood into the kitchen and use wood screws to secure it! My husband helped with the drilling part because it’s hard to hold the wood and drill the holes!

While you are at the Lowes bring the metal dowel that comes with the kitchen and have them cute a similar diameter dowel to the same length for you! I love the look of the wooden dowel! Another option for the metal dowel is you can spray paint it brass to match the faucet!

Once the backsplash is screwed on and the pieces that you spray painted are dry you can reattach the faucet and the leg pieces!

Here is the adorable kitchen in our playroom! Now all you need are the accessories for the kitchen. You can check my First Birthday Gift Idea post for some links to play food and pots and pans! I found the hanging wooden utensils at TJMaxx as well as the wicker basket tower, which I keep all of her play food in.

I even found the most adorable play chef hat and apron, and it was PERSONALIZED! Shop Laura Michelle on Etsy is amazing to work with and helped me create the perfect set for Elsie’s first birthday! You can get yours HERE.

How do you think her kitchen came out? Would you ever try to DIY a kitchen for your kiddos? I personally love how it turned out, and it was fairly easy!

Affordable Boo Basket Ideas

October 1, 2021      Kyla

I know it’s a little extra, I do. I love being a little extra though ha. The first time I saw a boo basket on social media I knew I was going to be starting the tradition with my own kids one day. It was finally my time to shine this year.

My goal with the boo basket I put together for my daughter Elsie was, it needed to be cute (duh), things she would actually use or play with, affordable, and reusable (year after year.) I think I hit all those goals. I want to help you do the same so I am going to show what I got her, and say where I got it, adding links when possible.

There were some things I did not include in the basket on Instagram because they did not fit well, but I will show them here as some *bonus* ideas!

Alright so let’s start with the basket and the custom basket tag! I love this custom wooden tag, it has the name etched/burned into the wood and has a leather tie. You can choose from different halloween themed shapes (a pumpkin, ghost, bat, spider, or a witch hat!) I love it so much, and it was really quick shipping considering it’s from an etsy shop.

Also I love this basket from Amazon, it is amazing and we use it for toys now, but it was also her Easter basket! It is so cute, affordable, and versatile.

Elsie loves books, and I have a picture book obsession so I picked up a few for her. I grabbed Vamperina Ballerina, My Little Pumpkin Pie, and Time for Halloween! Two out of the three of the books are board books which definitely are the best for Elsie right now, she loves to rip pages ha, but Vamperina was too cute to pass up!

I also grabbed this adorable pop it silicone bat. Elsie loves these and I thought the bat would be perfect for her basket.

I also found this precious witch hat headband at Target! It’s so cute and something she can definitely use year after year. She already had this little knit elephant from TJmaxx, but I grabbed it and put the little witch hat on it- boom, festive! You could also put a little witch hat on any other stuffed animal or doll for a cute and fun surprise.

I found these PJs at my TJmaxx! They were so affordable and way too cute to pass up. The beauty of TJMaxx is not every store has the same product, and you can’t just find it online, but that also stinks because I can’t link it. You can look in person at your TJMaxx or online at Target and Old Navy they have lots of options! I know Target has matching family Halloween pajamas! I also found these adorable ghost socks in the Target dollar spot for $1!

The ghost garland is also Tjmaxx! So cute! Sorry, I wish I could link the exact one, but I found one that’s similar here.

I also last minute picked up this fun home decoration that I thought she would think is so cool. Again, TJmaxx, so I can’t direct link, but you could find something similar at Lowes/Home Depot or Target! A fun tradition!

A few things I included that I haven’t mentioned yet are-

  • A Halloween themed head wrap for Elsie from Everbee Wraps! I even got myself a matching Mama knot headband.
  • An Amazon full size witch hat for kids, so fun and she can use year after year!
  • A dollar tree jumbo size halloween coloring book.
  • A handmade boho ghost wand and Spooky Vibes sweatshirt from my personal shop, Wildflower & Co on Etsy!
  • Spider web bummies from Dudis!
  • A Halloween card from Target!

This tiktok shows some of these items mentioned as I put the basket together!

I had so much fun putting this basket for her together, and she had even more fun looking through the basket today after her nap. I love creating traditions and making holidays fun and exciting, even if it is a little *extra* but I mean I’d rather be extra than basic, ha!
