If you are reading this, let me just start out with- I am so sorry, what you are going through is hell, and I have been where you are. When you are pregnant and already miserable from the realities of growing a literal human, the last thing you need is your stomach and/or entire body breaking out in an excruciating and itchy hive-like rash.
Unfortunately I was one of the unlucky ones that got what they call PUPPPs (which stands for Pruritic Urticarial Papules and Plaques of Pregnancy) Rash. My OB, and the internet says there is no known cause for this rash, and also no cure.
My Personal Experience
I had PUPPPs to a HORRIBLE extent with my first daughter. It started on my stomach and quickly spread to my legs and arms as well. I was miserable and depressed. With my second, my son, I felt it starting up. I immediately started my protocol and it never got bad like it did with my first.
I tried absolutely everything the first go around to combat this rash, and did ENDLESS research. Here is what I tried, what worked for me, and even what did not work for me in case it ends up working for you! My last suggestion will be what I think is the MOST helpful!
PUPPPs Remedies
*I am NOT a doctor or medical professional and this is not professional medical advice, this is just a Mama who suffered with this trying to help another Mama! Please check with your doctor.
Steroid Cream
When I first when to see my OB about this they prescribed prescription strength steroid cream and Benadryl. The Benadryl just made me sleepy, and I did not like taking it because I felt like I felt my baby move less and it gave me anxiety. The cream did not help at all, it actually seemed to make it worse. You do NOT want to moisturize this rash- DRY IT OUT.
Okay, this one really does help. You want to get a loofah and really suds it up. Then pat the suds onto the rash and let it sit on the rash for 5-10 min then rinse it off. It smells like a campfire, but just trust- it helps with the whole dry it out theory I swear by it and have been through my fair share of bars! At the height of my rash I would do this many times a day, but when it was under control I did it twice a day!
Very Hot Shower
You are going to think you want to keep it cool, and I get that, but one thing about the PUPPPs rash is it is an allergic reaction of some type. This is important because the hot water (or heat of any kind) causes the mast cells in your skin to release their supply of histamine and this supply stays low for up to 24 hours. This is an extended relief option. It feels HORRIBLE when you do it, I will warn you, but it scratches the itch without scratching the itch. I would always blast my rash with as hot of water as I could stand then shock it with the coldest setting on my shower before getting out. This REALLY gave me relief.
Dandelion Root + Nettle
A lot of people say that this can help by cleansing the liver and lowering inflammation. You can take it in pill/supplement form or you can drink it in tea form! I personally did not see much help from this, but some people swear by it.
Alright you wanted the big guns, well here they are. You may be confused, isn’t Pepcid for heartburn? Yes, but it is an antihistamine. Benadryl is an antihistamine, but Pepcid is an H2 antihistamine, which covers different things. Benadryl did not help me at all, but Pepcid helped a ton with my first and the second time around I started IMMEDIATELY upon symptoms, and it stopped the rash before it really got started and kept it a bay. I took one extra strength in the morning and one at night.
Clean Diet
Cleaning up your diet and eating foods that lower inflammation can sometimes help. A lot of women swear by cutting out gluten, dairy, and sugar. I know this can be daunting when you are very pregnant, but many have said it gives relief!
Prednisone (Prescription)
With my first go around with PUPPPs it got way out of hand, and NOTHING worked. I ended up on a low dose of prescription steroids until my daughter was born and I tapered off postpartum. Thankfully it cleared the rash a LOT and I was able to live again. If your OB seems at a loss, ask for a dermatologist referral.

Okay some things that really helped was a large Ice Pack for when I was resting and could ice the rash! I also preferred to wear LOOSE 100% cotton. I found it to be the most comfortable, although a sports bra and loose shorts was the comfiest for me at the height of my rash. I really think the key is keep it dry and cool unless you are doing a really really hot shower! Lotions never helped, they seemed to make it worse.

Pregnancy is supposed to be a sweet time between you and your little one, and for lots of Moms suffering with PUPPPs it is not. I know I was experiencing some of the darkest days dealing with this rash. Just know you are not alone, and there is light at the end of the PUPPPs tunnel!
I am rooting for you!
